WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:
Suggested Monologue Audition Pieces
From the Cherry Orchard (Charlotta): I haven't a real passport. I don't know how old I am, and I think I'm young. When I was a little girl my father and mother used to go round fairs and give very good performances and I used to do the salto mortale and various little things. And when papa and mamma died a German lady took me to her and began to teach me. I liked it. I grew up and became a governess. And where I came from and who I am, I don't know.... Who my parents were—perhaps they weren't married—I don't know. I don't know anything. I do want to talk, but I haven't anybody to talk to... I haven't anybody at all
From Little Women (Jo): It was several days before Christmas- (She grabs her portfolio and begins to write.) It was several days before Christmas. The sisters sat about the parlor and grumbled about their fate. Meg, the oldest and most romantic said, “It’s not fair some girls have pretty things while we have nothing.” “It won’t be Christmas without presents!” said Amy, with her usual pout. “And we haven’t got father to read to us.” Said Jo, who yearned to travel and write great books. Only Beth, sitting contented, said in a tone so sweet, even angels would have listened. “But we’ve got each other.”
From You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown (Sally) Do you know what I intend? I intend to be a queen. When I grow up I’m going to be the biggest queen there ever was, and I’ll live in a big palace and when I go out in my coach, all the people will wave and I will shout at them, and...and...in the summertime I will go to my summer palace and I’ll wear my crown in swimming and everything, and all the people will cheer and I will shout at them... What do you mean I can’t be queen? Nobody should be kept from being a queen if she wants to be one. It’s usually just a matter of knowing the right people.. ..well.... if I can’t be a queen, then I’ll be very rich then I will buy myself a queendom. Yes, I will buy myself a queendom and then I’ll kick out the old queen and take over the whole operation myself. I will be head queen.
From Our Town (George): Emily, I’m glad you spoke to me about that… that fault in my character. What you said was right; but there was one thing wrong in it, and that was when you said that for a year I wasn’t noticing people, and… you, for instance. Why, you say you were watching me when I did everything… I was doing the same about you all the time. Why, sure, - I always thought about you as one of the chief people I thought about. I always made sure where you were sitting on the bleachers, and who you were with, and for three days now I’ve been trying to walk home with you; but something’s always got in the way. Yesterday I was standing over against the wall waiting for you, and you walked home with Miss Corcoran. Listen, Emily, I’m going to tell you why I’m not going to Agriculture School. I think that once you’ve found a person that you’re very fond of… I mean a person who’s fond of you, too, and likes you enough to be interested in your character… Well, I think that’s just as important as college is, and even more so. That’s what I think.
From God of Carnage (Micheal): Yes. This hamster makes the most godawful racket all night, then spends the whole day fast asleep! Henry was in a lot of pain last night; he was being driven crazy by the noise that the hamster was making. And, to tell you the truth, I've been wanting to get rid of it for a long time, so I said to myself, OK, that's it, I took it and put it in the street. I thought they loved drains and gutters and all that, but I guess not, it just sat there paralyzed on the sidewalk. Well, they're not domestic animals, they're not wild animals, I don't really know where their natural habitat is. Dump them in the woods, they're probably just as unhappy, so I don't know where you're supposed to put them.
From The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime (Simon): I remember the 20th of July 2008. I was 9 years old. It was a Saturday. We were on holiday in Cornwall. We were on the beach in a place called Polperro. Mother was wearing a pair of shorts made out of denim and a stripy blue swimming costume, and she was smoking cigarettes called Consulate, which were mint flavour. And she wasn’t swimming. She was sunbathing on a towel, which had red and purple stripes and she was reading a book by Georgette Heyer called the Masqueraders. And then she finished sunbathing and went into the water and said, “Bloody Nora it’s cold.” And she said I should come and swam too, but I didn’t like swimming because I don’t like taking my clothes off. And she said I should just roll my trousers up and walk into the water a little way. So I did.

Suggested Monologue Audition Pieces ROXIE (from ‘Chicago’) You know, I always wanted to have my name on the papers. Before I met Amos, I used to date this wealthy dude, ugly bootlegger. He used to take me out and show me off. Ugly guys like to do that. Once it said in the paper, “gangland is seen with cute blonde.” That was me. You know, all my life I wanted to have my own act. But, no..., they always turned me down. One big world-full of no. And then Amos came along. Sweet Amos. Who never says no. Then I met Fred Casely. He said he could get me into a film. But that didn’t quite work out like I planned. So I gave up the whole idea. If you can’t figure out all of these, opportunities just pass you by. But now, with all this publicity, I got a world-full of yes!
MATILDA (from ‘Matilda: The Musical’) Once upon a time, the two greatest circus performers in the world – an escapologist who could escape from any lock that was ever invented, and an acrobat who was so skilled it seemed as if she could actually fly – fell in love, and got married. They performed some of the most incredible feats together anyone has ever seen. And people would come from miles around: kings! queens! celebrities! and astronauts! And not just to see their skill, but also to see their love for each other, which was so deep that it was said that cats would purr as they passed them, and dogs would weep with joy.
SNOOPY (from ‘You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown’) Here’s the World War I flying ace high over France in his Sopwith Camel, searching for the infamous Red Baron! I must bring him down! Suddenly, anti-aircraft fire, “archie” we used to call it, begins to burst beneath my plane. The Red Baron has spotted me. Nyahh, Nyahh, Nyahh! You can't hit me! Actually, tough flying aces never say “Nyahh, Nyahh.” I just, ah… Drat this fog! It’s bad enough to have to fight the Red Baron without having to fly in weather like this. All right, Red Baron! Where are you? You can’t hide forever!
CAT (from ‘Seussical the Musical’) I can see that you’ve got quite a mind for your age! Why, one think and you dragged me right onto the stage! Now, I’m here, there is no telling what may ensue…. With a Cat such as me and a Thinker like you! Oh the things you can think! Oh the things you can think if you’re willing try… Thinking invisible ink! Or a Gink with a stink! Or a stair in the sky If you open your mind, oh, the things you will find, lining up to get loose… Oh, the things you can think when you think about Seuss!
CAPTAIN VON TRAPP (from ‘The Sound of Music’) I’m Captain von Trapp. You are Fraulein Maria? Now, Fraulein, as to your duties here. You will be in charge of my children. There are seven of them. You will find out how far they have progressed in their studies and carry on from there. Each morning will be spent in the classroom. Each afternoon, they march. You will see that at all times they conduct themselves with decorum and orderliness. The first rule in this house is discipline. Children, this is your new fraulein – Fraulein Maria. As I sound your signal you will step forward and repeat your name. You, Fraulein, will listen and learn their signals so that you can call them when you want them.
REN (from ‘Footloose: The Musical’): We both are. You and me. We’ve both lost somebody. And even though people say they understand, they don’t really. I bet you stop a hundred times a day and wonder “why?” I do. I wonder why’d my Dad leave? Was it something I did? Something I didn’t do? Could I have made him stay? Maybe I could bring him back? But I can’t. But I don’t have to tell you. You know what that’s like. So, I guess I came to town frustrated and angry, and it felt really good to kick up a fuss. And I know it got people upset, and I’m sorry for that. But I’m just trying to move on. Cuz I’m so tired of looking back. And I can’t stand still. Okay, look, I’m gonna go. I know you’re gonna do what you’ve gotta do – about the dance and all – but thanks for listening.
